Toddlers and Tiaras
So, sitting here alone (Clay has a night sim) on this Friday night...I am belittled to watch TLC's show "Toddlers and Tiaras." It kills me watching these parents put their poor children in these pagents. One lady said she has spent over $65K on pagents for her daughter (who is in the category 0 - 4...meaning she is less than 4 years old!). Seriously, wouldn't you rather see that money spent on say...your child's college education?! I just don't understand the thrill behind making your child dress up and compete against other girls based on things such as "beauty" and "talent." What "talent" can a 2 year old have? I mean really! It will be these girls that grow up with eating disorders and turn to abusive men, drugs, or whatever when they no longer "feel good" about themselves. It's truly sad that parents subject their children to this sort of "standard." When did this become okay? I just don't get it. Shouldn't we, as parents, boost our child's self image and esteem? Shouldn't we show them that inner beauty means more than outer beauty? I just don't get it.

I watched that show for about 5 minutes and had to turn it off. I just cannot see the logic behind it. Those girls are being steered in such a wrong way.. It's a shame..... And the mothers... SERIOUSLY????? =)
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way as you! It is disturbing and unbelievable! I've only watched a commercial of it but even that had my jaw on the floor. I personally believe that these parents are suffering from feelings of inadequacies and are trying to "make up for it" through their daughters. Maybe they feel like they weren't pretty enough growing up or talented enough but it's "okay" because their daughters will be pretty and talented - even if it costs them $65k. Unbelievable.
